Why It Matters and How You Can Help
Every year on May 20th, folks around the world celebrate World Bee Day. This special day is all about raising awareness of how crucial bees and other pollinators are for the health of our ecosystems, food security, and biodiversity. It also shines a light on the many threats bees face due to human activities like pesticide use, habitat destruction, climate change, and diseases.
How World Bee Day Came to Be
The United Nations established World Bee Day in 2017 after Slovenia suggested the idea. They chose May 20th to honor Anton Janša, a trailblazer in modern beekeeping, born on this date in 1734. The goals of World Bee Day are simple yet vital:
- Raising Awareness: Educating people about why bees and other pollinators are essential.
- Promoting Action: Encouraging steps that help bees, like planting bee-friendly gardens and cutting back on pesticides.
- Highlighting Importance: Emphasizing how bees are key players in pollinating crops, crucial for our food and biodiversity.
- Addressing Challenges: Bringing attention to the hurdles bees face and advocating for sustainable solutions.

Why Bees Matter
Bees are mighty little pollinators, and their work supports the growth of many plants, including crops we depend on for food. Here are some key reasons why bees are so important:
- Pollination: Bees pollinate about 75% of the world’s flowering plants and 35% of global food crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds.
- Biodiversity: Bees help plants reproduce, maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem health.
- Economic Impact: The pollination services bees provide are invaluable, supporting agriculture and livelihoods.
How You Can Join the Buzz on World Bee Day
There are plenty of ways individuals, communities, and organizations can get involved and support bees on World Bee Day:
- Bee-Friendly Gardens: Plant flowers and plants that provide nectar and pollen for bees. (We know where you can get some!)
- Reduce Pesticides: Cut back on pesticide use in your garden or farm to help keep bees safe. (Or better yet, opt for OMRI listed organic products!)
- Support Local Beekeepers: Buy honey and other bee products from local beekeepers to support their crucial work. (Check out C & E General Market in Calais for some locally produced honey!)
- Advocacy: Stand up for policies and practices that protect bees and their habitats.
World Bee Day is a powerful reminder of how interconnected our ecosystems are and the pivotal role bees play in maintaining the balance necessary for life on Earth. So, let’s celebrate these amazing pollinators and take steps to ensure their survival. Happy World Bee Day!
