Agroforestry
A land use management system where trees or shrubs are grown around or among crops or pastureland to enhance biodiversity, improve water retention, and contribute to soil health.
Biochar
Charcoal produced from plant matter, stored in the soil as a way of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, improving soil fertility, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing soil moisture retention.
Companion Planting
The practice of growing different plants together for mutual benefits such as pest control, pollination, providing habitats for beneficial creatures, maximizing use of space, and enhancing crop productivity.
Conventional Farming
An agricultural method that often relies on chemical inputs like synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, and may use genetically modified organisms (GMOs). It aims to maximize yield and efficiency but can have negative impacts on the environment and soil health.
Cover Cropping
Crops planted primarily to manage soil erosion, soil fertility, soil quality, water levels, weeds, pests, diseases, biodiversity, and wildlife in an agroecosystem.
Drip Irrigation
A water-saving irrigation method that allows water to drip slowly to the roots of plants, either from above the soil surface or buried below, enhancing water efficiency.
Green Manures
Crops grown to be plowed back into the soil to improve soil fertility and organic matter content, supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
Hugelkultur
A technique where a mound is built from decaying wood debris and compostable biomass, covered with soil, and planted as a raised bed, enhancing soil fertility and water retention.
IIntegrated Pest Management (IPM)
A pest management strategy that minimizes economic, health, and environmental risks by combining physical, biological, and chemical control methods.
Mulching
Covering the soil surface with organic or inorganic materials to conserve moisture, improve soil health, reduce weed growth, and enhance visual appeal.
No-Till Farming
A technique that involves growing crops without disturbing the soil through tillage, improving water infiltration, organic matter retention, and nutrient cycling.
Organic Farming
A method of farming that avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, genetically modified organisms, and focuses on sustainability, environmental preservation, and soil health.
Permaculture
A design philosophy that uses patterns observed in natural ecosystems to create sustainable and self-sufficient agricultural systems.
Polyculture
The cultivation of multiple crop species in the same space, mimicking the diversity of natural ecosystems, to increase biodiversity and reduce the need for artificial inputs.
Raised Beds
Garden beds that are elevated above ground level, improving drainage, soil quality, and ease of access, and can be either contained or uncontained.
Rainwater Harvesting
The collection and storage of rainwater for reuse, reducing reliance on municipal water supplies and enhancing sustainability in gardening practices.
Rotational Planting
A method of rotating different crops in the same area over a series of seasons to improve soil health, reduce pest and disease buildup, and increase crop yield.
Soil Health Management
Managing soil to maintain and improve its health, ensuring it remains fertile, well-structured, and biologically active to support sustainable agriculture.
Till Farming
A traditional method of preparing the soil for planting by turning it over, which can control weeds and mix nutrients but may also disrupt soil structure.
Vermicomposting
The process of using worms to decompose organic waste, converting it into a nutrient-rich compost that is excellent for enhancing soil health and fertility.
